How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) – Review
How to Train Your Dragon 2 is a visually stunning and emotionally powerful sequel directed by Dean DeBlois. It builds beautifully on the foundation of the first film, offering a deeper and more mature story.
Set five years after the original, the story follows Hiccup and his dragon Toothless as they explore new lands and discover hidden worlds filled with dragons. During their journey, Hiccup encounters a mysterious dragon rider who turns out to be his long-lost mother, while also facing a dangerous new enemy who threatens the peace between humans and dragons.
One of the film’s greatest strengths is its emotional depth. It explores themes like family, leadership, and sacrifice, making it more mature than typical animated movies. The relationship between Hiccup and Toothless remains the heart of the story, filled with loyalty and friendship.
Visually, the movie is breathtaking. The animation is detailed and vibrant, especially during flying scenes, which feel thrilling and immersive. The action sequences are bigger and more intense compared to the first film, yet they never overshadow the emotional core.
The voice performances, including Jay Baruchel as Hiccup and Cate Blanchett as his mother, add strong emotional weight. The music and sound design also enhance the epic and emotional moments.
However, the film’s darker tone and certain emotional events may feel heavy, especially for younger viewers. Some parts of the story also move quickly, leaving less room for side characters.
Verdict: How to Train Your Dragon 2 is a powerful and beautifully crafted sequel—emotionally rich, visually stunning, and one of the best animated films of its time.
